Key Reminders Before Starting
-
Practice first: Put the empty tray in your mouth without putty to get used to the positioning and see where your teeth line up.
-
Work fast: Once the putties touch, chemical curing begins. You have roughly 30 to 45 seconds to mix and place it in the tray.
-
Keep steady: Moving, biting down, or talking while the putty sets will ruin the mold.
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Prep & Clean
-
Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly.
-
Wash and dry your hands completely.
-
Mix the Putty (30–40 Seconds)
-
Take one scoop/pack of the colored putty and one of the white putty.
-
Knead them together vigorously until the color is completely uniform with no white streaks.
-
Roll it into a smooth sausage/cylinder shape roughly the length of the tray.
-
Load the Tray
-
Place the putty roll evenly into the impression tray, curving it along the arch.
-
Do not press it flat; leave enough depth for your teeth to sink into.
-
Insert and Push (Do Not Bite)
-
Line up the tray centered over your teeth.
-
Use your fingers/thumbs to push the tray straight up (for top teeth) or straight down (for bottom teeth) in one smooth, firm motion.
-
Push deep enough so the putty wraps around the teeth and covers the gumline, but do not push so hard that your teeth touch the plastic bottom.
-
Hold Still (4 Minutes)
-
Keep firm, steady pressure on the tray with your fingers.
-
Do not bite down with the opposing jaw, and do not let the tray shift.
-
Breathe through your nose and wait the full 4 minutes until the putty is firm and rubbery.
-
Gentle Removal
-
Use your fingers to gently loosen the sides near the back molars first.
-
Pull straight down (or up) to release suction. Avoid wiggling or twisting as it comes off.
-
Rinse gently with cold water and let it air dry. Do not cut, trim, or remove the putty from the tray.
Checklist: What a Good Impression Looks Like
-
Deep gumline visible: The putty extends clearly past the neck of every tooth into the gum margin.
-
No plastic exposure: Teeth did not bite through the putty to hit the tray.
-
Smooth surface: No air pockets, drag marks, double-bite shifts, or marble streaks in the putty.
